View of Schladming Town Hall (befor the turn of the century)
In 1884, Prince August, Duke of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha, had a hunting castle built. The three-storey building without a court, with a front tower to the south, a central risalit to the north and polygonal oriels reflect the contemporary desires for a villa with any convenience and the representative requirement of a castle.
The brick façade with facing window and door frames, adorned battlements and dormer windows, follows loosely and randomly the English styles of castles and villas of the 16thand 17th century. The roofs on the other hand, rather follow the French example.
In 1940, the hunting castle was sold to the municipality of Schladming to become Town Hall. The interiors have mainly been modernised, while the outside building could keep some of the atmosphere of the date of its origin – also thanks to the preservation of the park.
