Historical development of the mining town Schladming

  • 1180 - first mention in a document, namely as "Slaebnich"
  • 1322 - first mention Schladming's as 'town' - the town privileges derived from the prosperous mining activity in the Schladming Tauern (extracting silver, lead and copper ore, later on also cobalt and nickel ore)- up to 1500 miners were working in the mines.
  • 1408 - The "Schladminger Bergbrief" (specification of the miners' rights and obligations), written by the municipal and mining judge Leonhard Eggelzain, became important all over Europe.
  • 1525 - revolt of miners and peasants. Following that, the town privileges were withdrawn, the town was burnt down (peasant and religious rebellion)
  • 1530 - re-awarding of the market right - 19th century: downfall of the Schladming silver and copper mining - the cobalt mining had to be ceased in 1818, nickel mining in 1875.
  • Schladming around 1830

  • 1875 - the Ennstal valley was made accessible by railway
  • 1884 - construction of a hunting castle by Prince August of Saxony-Coburg & Gotha (which is today owned by the town - town hall) - beginning of tourism and winter sports
  • 1908 - foundation of the local winter sports club - first ski races in the Schladming area are held around 1920
  • 1909 - foundation of the first brewery in the Alps ('Schladminger Bier')
  • 1953 - first ski lift on the Planai
  • 1973 - construction of the first Planai cable car (reconstructed in 1985), developing the Planai in the following years to become an international ski centre
  • 1973 - first World Cup race on the Planai (downhill) - following more Alpine Ski World Cup races in all disciplines: downhill, slalom, giant slalom and super-g
  • 1982 - Schladming and Haus hold the Alpine World Ski Championships
  • 1993 - Hosting the Special Winter Olympics
  • 1998 - linking together the skiing areas Hauser Kaibling - Planai and Hochwurzen - Reiteralm
  • 2001 - Ski Amadé (Austrias largest ski network)
